Video and audio file formats supported in PowerPoint
In PowerPoint 2013, you can insert and playback many different video and audio file formats. For the best video playback experience, we recommend that you use .mp4 videos encoded with H.264 video (a.k.a. MPEG-4 AVC) and AAC audio. For audio, we recommend using .m4a files encoded with AAC audio.
IMPORTANT Certain older video file formats may not compress or export properly in Office on a Windows RT PC. Instead, use modern media formats such as H.264 and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), which PowerPoint 2013 RT supports. Want to see what version of Office you’re using?
The following tables show the video and audio file types you can use with PowerPoint. PowerPoint may also support additional file types if you install additional video and audio decoders on your PC.
FILE FORMAT | EXTENSION |
Windows Media file | .asf |
Windows Video file (Some .avi files may require additional codecs) | .avi |
MP4 Video file | .mp4, .m4v, .mov |

Adobe Flash Media | .swf |
Windows Media Video file | .wmv |
IMPORTANT Adobe Flash isn’t available in Office on a Windows RT PC. Want to see what version of Office you’re using?

NOTES
- Even though your audio or video file may have the same file extension as one listed above, it may not play correctly if the correct version of the codecis not installed, or if the file is not programmed in a format that is recognized by your version of Microsoft Windows. Mostly, successful media playback relies on PowerPoint having the correct file format splitter, video data decoder, and audio data decoder.
- For more information about the most common codecs, including where to get them, see Frequently asked questions about codecs, Using codecs, or Encoding Audio and Video with Windows Media Codecs.
